The term ‘OCD’ has become a part of modern lingo where people who prefer keeping things tidy and neat refer to themselves as having OCD traits. There are even several stereotypical OCD characters on television portrayed as someone obsessed with cleaning germs. Most people fail to understand that their trivial references to OCD, minimizes the real experiences of people who are living with this disorder, and how it contributes to the stigma surrounding the disorder. A neat freak is simply a person who likes to be clean or keep the surroundings tidy. Possessing this quality doesn’t mean they have OCD.
What Is the Meaning of OCD?
OCD stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and encompasses obsessive thoughts and/or orders; compulsive behaviours; or both. People with OCD can experience persistent and intrusive thoughts or images, and/or compulsive urges and behaviours. OCD clients are aware that their fears and beliefs are irrational but refraining from acting on those obsessive thoughts can cause severe panic attacks. If obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours disrupt your daily routine, it may be beneficial to consult with a therapist or medical professional.
Some Common Obsessive Thoughts:
– Fear of being contaminated by dirt or germs
– Severe thoughts of hurting yourself or others
–Intrusive, sexually explicit, or violent thoughts
–Extreme focus on moral or religious ideas
–The belief that everything must stay in a specific order
–Intensely believing a particular action could cause good luck or bad luck
Some Common Compulsive Behaviours:
–Excessively checking things
–Regularly washing or cleaning oneself or some items
–Repeatedly checking things like the stove or doors
–Intensely praying or engaging in rituals due to extreme religious fear
–Arranging objects in line or order
–Counting, repeating certain words, or engaging in other irrational actions to decrease anxiety
What’s the Distinction Between Being a Neat Freak and Having OCD?
A neat freak is a person who likes being clean and keeping their space clean. It is a quality or habit of cleanliness that a person may like or prefer. In contrast, OCD is a disorder which causes obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviour, disturbing daily life and routine. It isn’t about cleaning but any obsessive thought or compulsive action which feels uncontrollable to the person experiencing OCD. The condition can also have negative impacts on relationships. Severe cases of OCD can even cause harm to the client and the people close to them.
If you notice these obsessive and compulsive traits in you or your family members, you should consult a qualified therapist or a medical professional to help treat the problem. OCD can be treated with medication or psychotherapy, or a combination of both.
