The experience of counselling is quite unique, with multiple different perspectives, values, and cultural experiences meeting together between individuals. I believe this requires a counsellor to embrace openness of diversity and welcome all other ideas and insights beyond their own. Respect must be the foundation of the relationship to support a meaningful interaction and expand our limitations of understanding another person’s experience. A counsellor should be curious in their non-judgmental exploration of another individual and embrace the position of not-knowing. Finally, I view accountability as the highest priority, there must be an acceptance of responsibility for our actions as counsellors. This translates to our ability to be accountable for our privileges and comforts that affect our ability to practice with people of all walks of life.
