Student Therapist

Fees: $60/hour plus GST. Student therapists are NOT covered under insurance plans.

I am a practicum student completing my work term at Onyx, and I work primarily with youth (16+) and young adults.

I am currently working towards finishing a graduate program with a Masters degree in counselling psychology. My interest in this career path had started by volunteering at a local counselling center. This experience has shown me how physical, psychological, and social harm from mental health issues can manifest in an individual’s life. Although, through the assistance and guidance of helping professionals, people can work to manage and overcome the issues that they face. The possibility of assisting a client to conquer the challenges they face and reach the goals they set for themselves is what has fostered my passion for this field.

I believe in a client-centered, collaborative, and strength based approach.

This perspective trusts the client as the ultimate decision maker and architect of their own lives. Client-centered therapy removes the clinician as the expert, and recognizes the client as the greatest authority as active agents of personal change. Additionally, this approach focuses on the human relationship as the primary medium through which therapeutic change and growth can be achieved. While the direction of the journey is chosen by the client, the path toward progress should be walked together with the support of the counsellor. Finally, I believe that individuals inherently possess the tools and knowledge of themselves to tackle the issues in front of them.

Openness, Respect, Curiosity, and Accountability.

The experience of counselling is quite unique, with multiple different perspectives, values, and cultural experiences meeting together between individuals. I believe this requires a counsellor to embrace openness of diversity and welcome all other ideas and insights beyond their own. Respect must be the foundation of the relationship to support a meaningful interaction and expand our limitations of understanding another person’s experience. A counsellor should be curious in their non-judgmental exploration of another individual and embrace the position of not-knowing. Finally, I view accountability as the highest priority, there must be an acceptance of responsibility for our actions as counsellors. This translates to our ability to be accountable for our privileges and comforts that affect our ability to practice with people of all walks of life.

I work to support teenagers and young adults

This stage of life can be extremely intense for many individuals, accompanied by major changes in autonomy and identity. There are also exceptional external pressures such as social media, fear of world events, peer pressure, self-esteem issues, and bullying. With all of these influences impacting a person, challenges such as feelings of hopelessness, sadness, depression, anger, and anxiousness can begin to overwhelm. I work with people to learn coping skills, understand distressing thoughts and emotions, and achieve growth in self-worth and self-compassion. I support clients to work towards achieving the goals that they create for themselves. Finally, I provide a safe and non-judgmental space for individual’s that feel they do not have an outlet to emotionally express themselves.
